Beatrice loves to show off. Her box pleats help her fabric to flare out where she proudly shows off her individuality. Her waist band is high and wide and she has a zip at her side, so as nothing can distract the eye of her beholders from her pleats. Beatrice is rather cheeky and she does love her colour, which is why sometimes you’ll find her with many multiple horizontal stripes in different contrasting or clashing fabrics.
Beatrice is lovingly made in Auckland by experienced vintage dressmaker Vanessa Kelly. Vanessa specialises in the design and creation of unique one-off pieces of women’s vintage clothing, especially retro dresses and skirts. With a large collection of 1950’s accessories available to work with Beatrice and all her friends, this really is the best online vintage dress shop in NZ!
Box pleats were not new to the 1950’s though. They have been around since the Italian Renaissance and the 16th century, just showing that great style never goes out of fashion. Constructed with a 3:1 ratio, meaning that three inches of non-pleated fabric make one inch of pleated fabric, box pleats helped to add some swing to skirts.
The post war era of the 1950’s saw box pleats become popular once more by adding some swing to their skirt and enjoying the end of fabric rationing. A special feature of box pleats means that the pleats do not actually have to touch and as they are quite wide, they are considerably more flattering than multiple small pleats.
Team Beatrice with a cute blouse or shirt, then prepare to enjoy the attention she attracts!
